Subcomandante Marcos, Leading Zapatista march
Zapatista revolutionaries, led by Subcomandante Marcos, arrived in the village of Nurio yesterday on the seventh day of their trip across Mexico. Taking in twelve states along the way, their 15-day march to the capital is drawing much national and international attention and is seen as a challenge to Vicente Fox, President of Mexico. Since taking office on December 1, the President has made concessions to Zapatista but has not gone far enough to draw them back to peace talks stalled since 1996. The revolutionaries, fighting for Indian rights, began an uprising seven years ago in Chiapas state. Yesterday, Mr Fox restated his willingness to return to the negotiating table as long as the process did not threaten the security of residents in Chiapas or elsewhere.
