Ivan Yates, To announce retirement tomorrow
The Fine Gael front-bencher, Ivan Yates, has been unavailable for comment this morning on newspaper reports that he is planning to retire from politics. The reports say the 41-year-old County Wexford TD intends to announce within the next day or two that he will not be a candidate in the next general election. It is understood that Mr Yates, who topped the poll for Fine Gael in Wexford in 1997 and is a former Minister of Agriculture, will be making a statement around noon tomorrow, citing business demands for the move. The Fine Gael deputy was first elected to the Dáil 20 years ago and for years was the youngest TD. His constituents and fellow Dáil deputies say that they are surprised by the news he is to step down.
