Two thousand protesters brought traffic to a standstill in Galway city today as they protested against proposals to build an incinerator near the city. 'Galway for a Safe Environment' have been campaigning for months against the Connaught Draft Waste Management Plan, which includes proposals for an incinerator. Galway County Council and Corporation already rejected the plan last summer. However, due to pressure from the Government and the Department of the Environment, it is to be put to a vote once again at a meeting of Galway Corporation next Monday night.

Meanwhile Galway's refuse remains on the streets, as there is no collection service, and no dump available to take waste. Last Thursday the Ballinasloe landfill dump closed to commercial waste, and has been picketed by some private waste contractors since then. There will be no refuse collection of any kind in Galway city on Monday as a result. The Corporation will issue a further statement on Tuesday.
