Dublin Corporation votes to introduce refuse charges

Updated: 22:31, Friday, 12 January 2001

Dublin Corporation has voted to accept a Fianna Fail motion to reduce proposed refuse charges from a suggested £150 to between 65 and 95 pounds.

Dublin Corporation narrowly avoided abolition tonight when members voted to accept the imposition of refuse charges. Its members had failed to agree on the introduction of a £150 charge put forward by the city manager. However, councillors agreed to accept a Fianna Fáil motion, which sees the introduction of a reduced charge of £65 to £95.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has withdrawn the whip from three Dublin city councillors who voted in favour of the City Manager's estimate for refuse charges at a meeting of Dublin Corporation. The party says Councillors Sean Kenny, Anthony Creevey and Eamon O'Brien are no longer deemed to be members of the Labour Party group on Dublin City Council.
