Moriarty Tribunal to issue order regarding Haughey

Updated: 19:43, Tuesday, 12 December 2000

The Moriarty Tribunal will sit tomorrow to make an order regarding Charles Haughey.

The Moriarty Tribunal will sit tomorrow to make an order regarding Charles Haughey. Last week, the Tribunal Chairman stated he wished to take evidence from Mr Haughey in private, following the advice of two independent consultants who have deemed him fit to continue co-operating with the Inquiry. Doctors for Mr Haughey contend that this could affect his life expectancy.

For the taking of private evidence Mr Justice Moriarty has the power to issue a High Court Order setting out the terms of how this evidence should be gathered. He has already indicated that he envisages Mr Haughey answering lawyers' questions in a private room in Dublin Castle. Transcripts may later be read into the public record.
