Gardaí at Newcastlewest, County Limerick, are investigating a robbery at the home of two elderly sisters who were barricaded in their kitchen pantry for almost two days. Gardaí believe two raiders broke into the women's home at Beechwood Gardens in Newcastlewest in the early hours of Sunday morning. Both women were put in a food pantry next to the kitchen and the door was then barricaded. The house was then ransacked and Gardaí believe a small amount of cash was taken.
The alarm was raised yesterday evening when a family member called to the house and discovered the two women. They were both taken to Limerick Regional Hospital to be treated for shock. One of them was detained overnight. Gardaí believe the intruders were in their 20s and of average height and build but they are hoping to get a better description when they interview both women today.
