Refugee Act comes into effect from midnight

All asylum seekers over the age of 14 are to be fingerprinted, once a new Refugee Act comes into effect from midnight tonight.

All asylum seekers over the age of 14 are to be fingerprinted, once a new Refugee Act comes into effect from midnight tonight. The 1996 Refugee Act will also give Gardaí increased powers to detain asylum seekers. Other changes under the new act include the introduction of an Independent Refugee Applications Commissioner who will make a recommendation and explain the reasons for granting or not granting refugee status to an asylum seeker.
