Scotland Yard's detectives have foiled an attempted robbery on diamonds worth £350m sterling which are on show at the Millennium Dome in London. Police in southeast England have arrested a twelfth person in connection with the attempted heist. They say that all those in custody are British and mostly based in south London, although several arrests were made in Kent. Four were arrested inside the Dome, and two near the River Thames, where the robbers had a powerboat waiting to speed them from the scene.

The raiders used a bulldozer to break into the Dome but armed Flying Squad detectives were lying in wait. A police spokesman said that if the raiders had been successful it would have been the biggest robbery in the world. The diamond had been swapped for a fake, after police were warned of the robbery plans.
