Michael Boyle, Tried to cross bridge
The man who drowned after being swept into the river near his home near the village of Ballinderry has been named locally as Michael Boyle. He was 66 years old and was single. Mr Boyle lived with his brother at Drominagh, Ballinderry outside Borrisokane in North Tipperary. A post mortem is due to be carried out on his body this afternoon at Nenagh General Hospital.
Gardaí investigating his death believe he was accidentally swept into the Ballinfinboy river near Nenagh by strong winds. Mr Boyle was being driven home by his brother to his home at around 12.30 last Monday morning. However he was forced to walk about 500 yards to his house because a fallen tree was blocking the road. It is believed that he was swept into the river as he made his way across a low lying bridge on the road home. The alarm was raised yesterday morning shortly after 8.30am when he was reported missing.
Meanwhile, the woman who died after being struck by a gate in Thomastown County, Kilkenny has been named as Philomena Barry, of Sugarstown House, Thomastown. She was in her late 60s.
