Police in Belfast are investigating claims that rival Loyalist paramilitaries were involved in the murder of a 21-year-old man in the north of the city. The victim, David Greer, was shot dead in the street. The UDA is blaming its rivals in the UVF but sources have said that the killing was not linked to the long-running feud in the Shankill area.

Mr Greer had been shot once in the chest and his body was left lying in the roadway. Police say they were reports of a disturbance before the shooting and a number of cars were seen leaving the area immediately after the attack.

The gun attack was condemned by the Democratic Unionist MLA for the area, Nigel Dodds. The North Belfast Assembly man said: "Whatever the circumstances, this act has got to be deplored. It will cause great concern in an area, which has seen a lot of trouble in the past. There is no doubt that this is an alarming development."
