Former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic was reported today to have chaired a meeting of his Socialist Party leadership, his first political act since he was overthrown earlier this month. Two Belgrade dailies reported that Milosevic chaired what one of them described as a heated session of the party's main board on Friday evening to discuss preparations for elections in Serbia, Yugoslavia's dominant republic, on December 23.

It was reported that some of those present at the meeting proposed that Milosevic be given one last chance to lead his party to success in the elections, with failure leading to his automatic resignation. The meeting came on the eve of a Serbian parliament session that is expected to announce a transitional power-sharing government to run the country until the elections. Although Milosevic was forced out from the presidency, his party and their left-wing allies still control the Serbian parliament, the main power base for federal Yugoslavia that also includes Montenegro.
