The funeral has taken place in Glasgow of the Scottish First Minister, Donald Dewar. Mr Dewar died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage last Wednesday at the age of 63. He was elected to lead Scotland's first home government since the union with England in 1707; he is widely regarded as the architect of Scottish devolution. Glasgow Cathedral was filled to capacity and thousands of people lined the streets to pay their respects. The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, and Opposition leaders were in Glasgow for the funeral.

The Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister will now head separately to South Korea for an Asia-Europe summit. The two leaders are expected to meet on the fringes of the summit to discuss the latest developments in the Northern peace process.
