Molloy welcomes near finalisation of Dublin taxi case

Junior Minister Bobby Molloy has welcomed the news of imminent finalisation of the Dublin taxi case by the High Court. He said the judgement will be examined as a matter of urgency in his Department and his view is that public demand must be satisfied.
The Labour Environment Spokesperson Eamon Gilmore said the judgement leaves the Government's policy in tatters. He called for action, not litigation and said that the Minister must put the interests of the travelling public before vested interests.
Earlier the High Court ruled that hackney drivers would be discriminated against, and that the Minister did not have the power to regulate the number of taxi licences. Mr Molloy said the Government would have to wait to hear the responses from both sides, due in a fortnight.
Meanwhile, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has called on Minister Bobby Molloy to introduce emergency measures to ensure that there are sufficient taxis available for the Christmas peak period. The Chamber consider that at least 500 new taxis are required on the streets, even if that involves the issuing of temporary licences.
