As Yugoslavia's new President, Vojislav Kostunica, begins his first full day in office, the country has begun to see the first economic dividends of the departure of Slobodan Milosevic. Germany has announced that it will provide almost £1m in aid to clear the River Danube of debris from last year's NATO bombing.

The European Union is likely to agree tomorrow to grant emergency aid to the new Government and to lift the sanctions that have crippled Yugoslavia's economy. Mr Kostunica was sworn in as President last night. The first Western politician to visit him was the Greek Foreign Minister, George Papendreou, who said that he believed that the EU would move swiftly to end the sanctions.
