George Speight, Faces treason charges
The leader of the coup in Fiji earlier this year has had his hopes of release from jail dashed after the country's High Court made a surprise intervention in the case. At a hearing in the capital, Suva, the Chief Magistrate said that the court had ordered him to make no further rulings on the validity of the immunity that was granted by the military to George Speight and his followers men during their siege of the country's parliament.
It had been expected that treason charges against Mr Speight would be dropped, leaving only minor offences for which he could be freed on bail.
