The inquiry was due to have resumed on September 4
The resumption of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry in the Autumn is likely to be delayed following the resignation of Sir Edward Somers, one of three tribunal members hearing the evidence at the Guildhall in Derry. Sir Edward, a former New Zealand Appeal Court judge, cited personal reasons for his resignation.
In a letter to the Northern Secretary, Peter Mandelson, he said that he had concluded that he would not have the energy or vigour that would be required over the remaining two or three years the tribunal is expected to sit. A successor to Sir Edward will be appointed by the British government and his replacement is likely to be drawn from within the British Commonwealth.
This means that the resumption of the Inquiry due on September 4, will be delayed by some weeks.
