John Taylor, demands more concessions
Anti-Good Friday Agreement Unionists have said they have their own plan for devolved government. The MP, Jeffrey Donaldson, said the plan would be put to the party's ruling council meeting on Saturday. He gave no details, but said the package would deal with the issue of arms and the issue of government. A Unionist colleague and former minister in the Stormont executive, Michael McGimpsey, challenged Mr Donaldson to release details of his proposals immediately.
Today in Stormont, the Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble and his supporters have been holding a series of meetings ahead of Saturday's vote by the party's ruling Council, which could pave the way for a return to a power-sharing administration. Yesterday evening, Mr Trimble stressed that it was necessary to put the IRA to the test. He said it was entirely a matter for republicans to honour their word and, if they did not, then the political consequences would fall on them.
In Dublin, a delegation from the Northern Ireland Police Federation, The RUC Widows association and the Disabled Officers Association, meet with the Taoiseach at the government buildings this evening. In what is being described as a "friendship call", it is understood that they expressed concern over the planned reform of RUC in an attempt to keep the name and the symbols of the police force.
