Taoiseach defends nomination of O'Flaherty to European Investment Bank The Taoiseach has defended the nomination of former Supreme Court judge, Hugh O'Flaherty, to the European Investment Bank. Mr Ahern said that account had been taken of his superb qualifications for the job and not of the controversy over the Sheedy affair. However, the Progressive Democrats senator, Helen Keogh, said that she was very surprised at the appointment because less than a year ago Mr O'Flaherty had been involved in what had been a public scandal at the time.

Five civilians killed in South Lebanon as security zone disintegrates Five civilians have been killed in southern Lebanon, as Israel's security zone there has begun to effectively disintegrate. Members of the Israeli-backed militia have been fleeing, as Israeli soldiers continue their planned withdrawal from the security zone it has occupied for more than twenty years. Fighting has broken out, as Hizbollah guerrillas and civilians move into the area. Some of those killed today by Israeli fire were in the Irish sector of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force.

Trimble urges council delegates to put IRA to the test The Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has urged delegates to a key meeting of the party's ruling council to put the IRA to the test and hold them to their promise to put their weapons beyond use. Mr Trimble also said that the proposed inspection of arms dumps was tantamount to decommissioning. The DUP leader, Ian Paisley, has accused Mr Trimble of being a salesman for the provisional IRA.

Man sentenced to 7 years after Semtex seizure A Dublin electrician has been jailed for seven years by the Special Criminal Court for having control of one of the largest hauls of Semtex ever found in the State. Padraig Steenson of Leinster Avenue, North Strand was found guilty in April of the unlawful control of the explosives and other bomb-making equipment.

Study finds Irish have highest credit transfer charges in Eurozone A new study by the European Commission has found that Irish banks have the highest credit transfer charges in the Eurozone. The study found that to transfer 100 euros from Ireland to another Eurozone state cost more than 25 euros. To transfer the same sum from a Luxembourg bank cost just 8 1/2 euros.

Gardaí investigate two separate incidents in which men died Gardaí in Longford investigating the suspicious death of a man following a disturbance outside a take-away this morning have appealed to the public for information. In a separate investigation in Buncrana, County Donegal, Gardaí say that there are conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of the death of a 19-year-old local man.

17-year-old released after questioning about Kells stabbing A 17-year-old boy who was being questioned in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Kells, County Meath, last night, has been released. A file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. 45 year-old Gerard Kavanagh from Calliaghstown, Kells, died after being stabbed at his home.

Eircom share price hits all-time low The price of Eircom shares hit an all-time low today at ¤3.30, a fall of 40 cents on the opening price. However, it rallied somewhat, closing at ¤3.47. However, shareholders are expected to face further losses this week with the news that KPN and Telia, who own thirty 30% of the company, could sell their shareholding to institutional and private investors.

Gilligan given free legal aid Kevin Meehan, the father of Brian Meehan who is serving a life sentence for the murder of Veronica Guerin has been convicted of money laundering offences involving sums of over £90,000. He, along with his brother, Tom, who has been convicted of similar offences, will be sentenced on Wednesday. In a separate development, the Special Criminal Court has given free legal aid to John Gilligan, who is accused of the murder of Veronica Guerin. Mr Gilligan was remanded in custody to appear again at the Special Criminal Court next month.

Man jailed for four years for failure to make tax returns A Cork City horse dealer who was prosecuted by the Criminal Assets Bureau for failing to make income tax returns has been jailed for four years. Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard that Jeremiah O'Driscoll, with addresses at Hollyhill and Farmer's Cross in Cork City, had more than 30 previous convictions.

Sir John Gielgud dies aged 96 The British actor, Sir John Gielgud has died. He was 96. He died at his home in Buckinghamshire yesterday. The Shakespearean actor, was renowned as one of the greatest performers of his generation.

Home News in Brief A 35-year-old Dublin woman has been arrested in connection with the murder of Derek Benson, who was stabbed to death in Ballymun last Saturday week. A 21-year-old man has already been charged with the murder.

Walsh predicts rise in farm incomes The Minister for Agriculture has said that he is very upbeat about the prospects for farming this year. Joe Walsh said that, after years of falling incomes, farmers could be in for an increase of 10%.

World Africa Day puts spotlight on state of African nations Next Thursday is World Africa Day, a day when Africans should be celebrating freedom from foreign domination. However, the promise of the mid-90s has not been realised. Ethiopian forces are reported to have advanced into Eritrean territory, looting homes and burning villages, and taking hundreds of prisoners. However, this is just one of many conflicts that threaten to devastate the African continent.

Hillary Clinton faces new opponent in battle for Senate seat Hillary Clinton faces a new opponent in her battle for a seat in the US Senate. New York Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, withdrew from the race on Friday and will be replaced by a relative unknown, Congressman Rick Lazio. The new Republican candidate has already launched a verbal attack on the First Lady.
