Business: First Active and Anglo Irish Bank confirm merger talks

Updated: 13:46, Monday, 15 May 2000

In just under an hour, over 350 tour operators from 29 countries will be attending a Bord Fáilte-organised travel trade workshop at the RDS in Dublin.

First Active and Anglo Irish Bank have confirmed market speculation that they are in merger talks. The boards of both banks have described them as preliminary discussions in a statement issued to the Stock Exchange this morning. First Active's share price has performed badly since the former building society floated on the stock market in 1998. Anglo Irish Bank is mainly involved in business lending. Its shares fell 6 per cent this morning on the back of the news.
