Sir Ronnie Flanagan, orders review of Omagh investigation
The RUC Chief Constable, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, has ordered a major review of the police investigation into the Omagh bombing. The independent assessment, is the first of its type to be carried out by the RUC and will be headed by Superintendent Brian McVicker. Sir Ronnie said the review will be detailed and thorough, adding that the police force owed nothing less to the relatives of the 29 victims killed in the attack. He added that officers from Greater Manchester and the Metropolitan Police, including those who reviewed the Jill Dando killing, have already advised the squad.
But Sir Ronnie has defended the original investigation saying it was, and continues to be of the highest order. Although over 2,000 people have been interviewed and 3,000 statements taken as part of the investigation, no one has been charged with the August 1998 bombing. One man has been charged in connection with the attack.
