The strike threatened by drivers on Dublin's DART system, which was due to begin this morning, has been called off. The unofficial action was averted shortly after 1am this morning after nearly twelve hours of negotiations at the Labour Relations Commission. It is understood that a framework to deal with the dispute was put forward by the Commission. The two unions involved, SIPTU and the NRBU, have agreed to ballot their members on the proposals by tomorrow evening.

The LRC proposals which emerged after almost twelve hours of negotiations were put to both the management and the unions involved, SPITU and the NBRU. The unions will now ballot and in the interim Irish Rail has agreed to a request from the LRC to defer the deployment of extra drivers for a further 48 hours in order to await the outcome of the ballot. DART drivers are scheduled to meet this evening to discuss the new formula. The drivers' main concern appears to centre on the separation of the proposals to deploy new drivers from the long running pay talks with the company.
