Mary O'Rourke, Recommends break-up of CIE
The Minister for Public Enterprise, Mary O'Rourke, has recommended a complete overhaul of the country's bus and rail services, including the break-up of CIÉ. In a submission to a cabinet sub-committee, her department is recommending sweeping changes, which would see the three operating companies of CIÉ turned into independent firms. The document also says that privatising the operation of rail services should be considered, although the ownership of the network should remain in state hands.
