McGuinness reiterates denial he fired shots on Bloody Sunday

The Sinn Féin negotiator, Martin McGuinness, has again denied claims that he fired one or more shots on Bloody Sunday in 1972. In a BBC interview, Mr McGuinness said that he wanted to get to the truth of what happened that day and was considering giving evidence to the Saville Tribunal that is now examining the events.

Earlier this week, the tribunal heard that Mr McGuinness had told an informer he had fired the shot that precipitated the killings. In today's interview, he admitted that he took part in the march that preceded the shootings, but said that he fired no shots. He said that he had been arrested many times since then, but had never been questioned about the allegation.
