Voting in the Russian Presidential election begins in two hours time in the Far East of the country. It is an election which the acting president Vladimir Putin is expected to win with ease - his popularity largely based on the war in Chechnya. However it is a war that is likely to continue long after Mr Putin is installed in the Kremlin.
Four Russian soldiers were killed and another three wounded in an ambush by Chechen rebels near Argun, east of the province's capital, Grozny. A vehicle carrying the Russian soldiers ran over a mine and Chechen fighters opened fire on them. The Russian military has warned of attacks in Chechnya by guerrilla forces to disrupt Sunday's presidential election in Russia.
