Secret police tape throws O'Neill verdict into doubtTuesday 14 March 2000 23.48
A secret tape recording of the police raid in 1996 in London during which Diarmuid O'Neill was shot dead has been obtained by the BBC Spotlight programme. A member of an IRA gang believed to be planning a bombing campaign in Britain, O'Neill was shot six times by police. A jury ruled that he had been lawfully killed. But his family believe that this new tape shows that he was trying to surrender when he was shot.
