A Dublin man has been convicted of the murder of John Murray in Mulhuddart in Dublin two years ago. After just under six hours of deliberations the jury at the Central Criminal Court returned a majority verdict of murder for 24-year-old Stephen Doyle, of Balcurris Road in Ballymun. Another man, William Broderick, was found not guilty of murder but guilty of violent disorder.
John Murray was violently beaten to death on January 15 in 1998 at a house in Parslickstown Green in Mulhuddart in Dublin. During the two-week trial, the Court had heard that one of the accused, Stephen Doyle, believed his child was being molested by a boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend. After several drinks one night he and three friends called to the house of his ex-girlfriend, Caroline O'Connor. They found John Murray sleeping in the upstairs bedroom. He was murdered there. However John Murray had nothing to do with Doyle's ex girlfriend or child. He was completely innocent and simply in the wrong place at the wrong time when he was beaten to death.
Today, after just under six hours of deliberations, the jury of six men and six women found Doyle guilty of murder and of violent disorder. William Broderick was found not guilty of murder but guilty of violent disorder. Although sentencing has not been passed, Doyle will be have to be jailed for life. Broderick on the other hand has been released on bail until May 2 when sentencing occurs.
