Hundreds of workers at Tara Mines have voted narrowly tonight in favour of a survival plan to secure the future of the County Meath plant, the largest zinc mine in Europe. Underground workers voted by 118 to 105 in favour of the package, brokered by Meath County Council chairman, Brian Fitzgerald. SIPTU Regional Secretary, Jack O'Connor, has thanked Mr Fitzgerald and local TD, Minister Noel Dempsey, for their intervention. Tara Mines management has said it won't comment until craft-workers vote on the deal next Tuesday.
