Shop stewards at Tara Mines are studying new proposals for work practices and terms of employment at the Navan mine. The proposals were drawn up by two mediators after 72 hours of discussions between unions at Tara and company management over the weekend.

After three unsuccessful initiatives over the last two years the time for talking at Tara Mines is running out. Over the weekend new proposals for shift arrangements and terms of contracts were drawn up by the Chairman of Meath county council Brian Fitzgerald and Janet Hughes of the Labour Relations Commission.

24 shop stewards at Tara are studying the details of this plan for the first time this evening and it is expected that a ballot of the 600 workers at the mine will take place later in the week. The outcome of that vote is absolutely critical. Tara Mine is still losing £1 million a month and the company has already said that it wants to employ more contract staff from abroad to improve productivity.

Miners at Tara rejected the last proposals for work practices by more than three to one.
