Tara Mines, Talks continue on its future
Talks on the future of Tara Mines are continuing in Navan this evening as union officials and management at the mine endeavour to draw up another proposal for new work practices. SIPTU officials and Tara bosses are meeting at the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan under the facilitation of the Chairman of Meath County Council Brian Fitzgerald. Neither group is making any comment to the media on the latest proposal.
After meeting the Tánaiste Mary Harney last week the company and the union were both told that agreement would have to be forthcoming before 12 midnight tonight. If an agreement emerges it will then be put to the workers in ballot. This could happen on Monday or Tuesday with no result until next Friday. Miners rejected the last proposal by three to one.
