The president of Austria, Tomas Klestil, has been trying to allay international concerns at the possibility of the far right Freedom Party forming a new coalition government. He said democracy and pluralism would continue to prevail in his country.

The Freedom Party, led by Jorg Haider, has been holding talks on a possible coalition with the conservative People's Party, after earlier attempts to form a centre left government failed. If successful, Haider's party would be the first extreme-right wing group to share power in the EU.
