Tara Mines, Future in doubt
The Minister for the Environment, Noel Dempsey, and the Tánaiste, Mary Harney, have asked management and unions at Tara Mines to agree to mediation talks headed by local council leaders. In a statement, they said the process should last no longer than 5 February. The future of the mines, Europe's largest zinc mine, was thrown into doubt last Friday after workers overwhelmingly rejected proposals aimed at averting its closure.
