Senior Palestinian officials have reacted angrily to indications from Israel that it may postpone a further transfer of land in the West Bank that was due to take place next Thursday. A spokesman for the Palestinian President, Yasser Arafat, said the postponement would be a violation of the latest peace accords. Israeli diplomatic sources have said the withdrawal from a further 6% of the territory will be deferred until the Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, has completed a new round of peace talks with Syria in the United States. No date has been set for his return.
