At least twenty people were killed when a bomb exploded in a crowded market in the Kashmir city of Srinagar. The victims included fourteen civilians and four Indian security guards. The area was immediately cordoned off by security forces. The bomb attack has heightened tension over India's decision to free three pro-Kashmiri militants at the weekend, ending an eight day airplane hi-jack.
Police in India have blamed Muslim militants fighting to end Indian rule in Kashmir for the attack. More than 25,000 people have died in violence related to a Muslim separatist drive raging since 1989 in the Himalayan Indian state of Kashmir. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the militants.
