Chechen refugees, Warned to leave Grozny
President Clinton has tonight warned Russia that it will pay a heavy price for its actions in Chechnya. Earlier today, Russia warned all civilians remaining in the Chechen capital, Grozny, that they are to leave the city within five days, or risk being shot as terrorists. Russian aeroplanes dropped leaflets warning that anyone still in Grozny on Saturday would be considered an enemy target. It is reported that Russian soldiers have set up a security corridor to allow people to leave Grozny.
Chechen officials say nearly 50,000 people are still in Grozny, but Russia disputes that, alleging that the city is almost entirely occupied by guerrillas. Russian troops have closed in on both the capital and two other key towns leading to it.
