The Russian advance continues,
Up to 50 refugees have been killed after a Russian attack on a refugee convoy in Chechyna, according to eyewitnesses. Russian troops are reported to have advanced to within two kilometre of the capital Grozny. Fierce clashes have been reported around the town of Urus Martan, 12 miles southwest of the capital. However, despite an escalation of the Russian campaign, the Russian authorities have not said that Grozny is encircled. A key member of the Russian military said that further efforts were needed to cut communication lines between the Chechen resistance fighters and their strongholds in the southern mountains.
