Russian troops in Chechnya
The head of the International Monetary Fund has said that negative world reaction to the Chechen conflict could put Russia's IMF loans at risk. Speaking in Spain the IMF's Managing Director, Michel Camdessus, said that the organisation could not go forward with the financing because the Russian campaign in Chechnya has been criticised by many countries. Russia has been pressing the IMF to release the second $640 million tranche of a $4.5 billion loan package agreed in July. Reports say that around 260 people have been killed in the latest phase of Russian attacks.
