The Garda computer system, which supplies the force with criminal records and other information, is being switched off at midnight tonight. It is to be replaced by the new £40 million PULSE computer system. However, rank and file Gardaí are refusing to use the new system. So from midnight, Gardaí throughout the country will have to depend on written records. The Garda Commissioner, Pat Byrne, has described the situation as totally unacceptable. The Garda Representative Association said that it was very anxious to see the dispute settled.
