Plans are being prepared for Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin to become part of a new, purpose-built children's hospital on the site of the Mater Hospital. The project will cost over £175 million and will take seven years to complete. The project was made possible following a deal struck between the two orders of nuns who run both hospitals.

The plans involve a new children's hospital and also a new outpatients and Accident and Emergency facilities for the Mater as well as new operating facilities. The 900 staff at Temple Street have been assured that there will be no reductions in numbers as a result of the amalgamation.
