600 workers at six Tesco stores in the Midlands are to go on strike on Friday in a dispute over pay scales. All of the employees are members of the SIPTU trade union and have rejected a Labour Court recommendation to settle the dispute. Tesco are seeking the co-operation of workforce in the introduction of increased technology and flexibility while the union is seeking the same rate of pay to be applied to all staff around the country.
At the moment, Tesco staff in rural areas are presently paid less than their colleagues in major urban centres, a situation SIPTU have strongly opposed. MANDATE workers at the Tesco stores involved in Athlone, Mullingar, Edenderry, Portlaoise, Mullingar and Cavan have accepted the Labour Court recommendations.
