Russian warplanes attacking rebels in the breakaway Republic of Chechnya are reported to have bombed the capital, Grozny, this morning, killing and injuring scores of people. Witnesses said the bombing lasted around 40 minutes and several parts of the city had been hit. The exact number of casualties is not yet known. A Russian defence ministry spokesman said he could neither confirm nor deny the attack.
