Armenian Interior Minister resigns after parliament shooting

watch

The Armenian Interior Minister - Suren Abramian - has handed in his resignation following yesterday's shooting at the parliament that left the prime minister and several politicians dead. The military has demanded a major security shake-up after the assault on the building. The gunmen surrendered to police and released their hostages after they were promised they would get a fair trial.

Today, as the gunmen released about 25 hostages, there were calls for the resignation of government ministers in Armenia. Questions were also raised about lax security around the parliament building. The six gunmen surrendered after overnight negotiations with the authorities. A statement by the men said personal safety was their key demand. The men also said that their action was a protest against government policies, but they did not cite any specific grievances.
