Emergency services at the scene of the crash
Four people, three women and a two-year-old girl have been killed in an accident outside Charleville in County Cork tonight. It is believed all four were related and are from the from the Charleville area. Unconfirmed reports from the scene say that two of the women were sisters. The accident occurred in the townland of Knockardarum on the Mallow side of Charleville in County Cork.
The four who died are believed to have been travelling in one car when they were involved in a collision with another car on the main Cork to Limerick road at Cooleens outside Charleville at about 5.30pm this evening. Their bodies have been taken to Mallow General Hospital where post mortem examinations will be carried out. The sole occupant of the other car, whose condition is not yet known, has been taken for treatment to Cork University Hospital.
This accident comes just a few days after Gardaí and the National Safety Council launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of deaths on our roads. Tonight's fatalities bring to six the number of people who have died in traffic accidents since last Friday, and to 348 the number of road traffic deaths this year.
