The Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has said the East Timor independence leader Xanana Gusmao is to travel to Jakarta and will meet Indonesia's new leaders. President Wahid said it was important for Indonesia to remain on good terms with an independent East Timor. Last week Jakarta revoked its 1976 annexation after the territory overwhelmingly rejected Jakarta's rule in an August referendum.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has voted to send 9,000 peacekeeping troops to East Timor to oversee its transition to independence. Hundreds of police and military observers will also be involved. The UN Transitional Administration in East Timor will replace the Australian-led international force, INTERFET, which was dispatched last month to restore order after violence erupted in the territory following its vote for independence.
