Zemin rejects human rights criticism

The Chinese President, Jiang Zemin, who is visiting France, has rejected international criticism over human rights, claiming that his country has earned recognition for its successes in promoting freedom.

The Chinese President, Jiang Zemin, who is visiting France, has rejected international criticism over human rights, claiming that his country has earned recognition for its successes in promoting freedom. His visit to France, however, has resulted in more protests. Mr. Zemin also said that French leader Jacques Chirac does not support calls for the independence of Tibet. Tibetan activists have been at most of the demonstrations held in France to mark Jiang Zemin's five-day visit.
