The 24-hour rail strike due to have started at midnight tonight has been deferred. A SIPTU spokesman, Tony Tobin, said that a working party of management and union officials will meet next week under the auspices of an independent chairman. John Keenan, of Iarnród Éireann, said that he was delighted; the strike by level crossing keepers threatened to disrupt the travel plans of 100,000 people over the bank holiday weekend.
