The Minister for Agriculture, Joe Walsh, has said that he will try to bring in changes, to encourage more young people to stay in farming. The Minister, who was opening the national ploughing Championships in Co Cork, said that he was worried about the growing trend, in the last year or so, for young people to turn their backs on farming. The opening of the championships coincides with a brightening outlook for the farming sector, as grain farmers reaped a good harvest this year.

The Minister of State for Agriculture Ned O'Keefe has called for a permanent site for the National Ploughing Championships. This year's championships begin this morning in Castletownroche, County Cork. Over 140,000 spectators are expected to attend the event over the next three days. Thousands of people have begun arriving at Castletownroche for the Championships which begin at midday. The organisers say that ground conditions are very muddy because of the recent rain. There are reported to be long delays getting onto the ploughing sites.
