The final votes were cast this evening in the countrywide pay ballot by the country's 27,000 nurses. The four unions are expected to overwhelmingly reject a £60 million package proposed by the Labour Court three weeks ago. The votes will be counted tomorrow and rejection will lead to an immediate strike ballot with the start of industrial action pencilled in for October 19. The turnout over the past fortnight is reported to have been unusually high, and at least one of the four unions is already forecasting well over 90% in favour of throwing out the Labour Court's latest package. There is no indication that any new offer will be made by the Government side in an effort to head off a confrontation; some sources suggest the only negotiations now will be on a return-to-work formula.
