Raisa Gorbachev, the wife of the former Soviet president, Mikhail Gorbachev, has died after a long battle with leukaemia. Mrs Gorbachev, who was 67, had been undergoing treatment since July at a clinic in the German city of Munster. Her husband had spent much of that time by her bedside. Doctors had hoped to carry out a bone marrow transplant, but Mrs Gorbachev was too ill to undergo the operation.
