A nine-year-old girl from County Cork has died of meningitis. The girl, who is from Blarney, was taken to Cork University Hospital on Wednesday night after showing symptoms of meningococcal meningitis, the most severe form of the disease. She died 24 hours later.

The Southern Health Board is advising the public to be alert to signs of the illness, which include high temperatures, headaches, vomiting, and an aversion to bright light. Information leaflets are being distributed in the area, and antibiotics will be offered to people who may have been in contact with the girl.
