Galway Garda Station, American citizen held
A Co. Galway woman has been charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court tonight in connection with the plot to smuggle guns into Ireland from the United States. Jacueline McIntyre, a 32-year-old a native of Spiddal with an address at Knock Holiday Homes, Iverin in Co. Galway was charged with possession of three Kruger 357 Magnum revolvers, three semi-automatic pistols and 120 rounds of ammunition on Tuesday last.
Ms McIntyre, the mother of a three month old baby was remanded in custody until October 12th next to Mountjoy jail, with consent to independent bail of £20,000 and her own bond of £2,000. The court also ordered her to surrender her passport and report twice a week to Spiddal Garda Station if she takes up bail.
A Belfast man, arrested at the same time, has been released without charge. A second man, an American, who was also arrested County Galway in connection with attempts to smuggle guns and ammunition into this country is still be held.
Earlier this evening at the expiry of the 72-hour maximum period of detention under the Offences Against the State Act she was released and immediately re-arrested in the Garda Station. She was originally arrested at a holiday cottage near Inverin in Connemara on Tuesday afternoon and questioned in connection with alleged attempts to smuggle guns and ammunition into this country trough the post.
Gardaí are continuing to question a middle aged American who was arrested in Clifden last night. The man, believed to be in his 50s with an address in California was taken to Mill St. Garda Station in Galway City, where he is being held under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act. He had earlier flown into Shannon Airport. He travelled to Clifden by car and booked into a hotel there.
The three Irish people held in Florida on guns charges have been refused bail.
